Professor James Lovelock is a senile and sociopathic twat

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I used to love this guy. His creation of the Gaia hypothesis was at once beautiful, elegant robust and poignant. Then he wrote this manifesto for Renewable Energy Nihilism.
Never one to let such ignorance roam across the land unopposed, George took the sturdy hammer of his intellect to the issue and destroys Lovelock's arguments utterly. He also takes the opportunity to knock a few more chunks of greenwank off the governments bizarrely optimistic targets for renewable energy.
"The government, as far as I can tell, has not yet formally renounced the target it set in 2000: that 10% of our electricity supply should come from renewables by 2010. So far it has managed 4.9%, and it has 9 months in which to make up the difference. Its objective for 2020 is beginning to look almost as unrealistic."
"As wind was the primary means by which the government was hoping to replace fossil fuels, the great pull-out appears to destroy any remaining likelihood that this country can meet its obligations under either the European directive or the UK’s climate change act."
So, once again, the UK government is making no serious effort to mitigate climate change, despite its loud protestations to the contrary. The UK government is shit.
UK police declare 200 children to be "terrorist suspects"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

WTF? This just isn't funny. Children? Children for fuck's sake!

"What will often manifest itself is what might be regarded as racism and the adoption of bad attitudes towards 'the West'."
Said the senior pig in charge.

Punkscience is completely immune to charges of racism but as far as a "bad attitude towards 'the West'" goes, he's pretty fucking guilty of that. I think Western society is a fucking joke. Subtle imperialism, corruption and corporate globalisation are a threat to everything I hold dear in the Western world and they are products of that same world. But my attitude is very different from rucksack bombs and fundraising for the Taliban. I note that this program is exclusively targeted at Islam. As if other religious fundamentalists aren't any sort of threat to the integrity of our society (think Catholics and stem cell research, abortion and sex education or the Labour Friends of Israel parliamentary group and war crimes, or the various cultural and religious forces fuelling arranged marriages, female genital mutilation, other misogyny etc. etc. etc. etc.). No, it seems other religious and cultural phenomena promoting equally inhuman philosophies are ignored when there are Mooslims to persecute.

I might add that, to many children living amidst such a culture of pernicious persecution, where the people they are meant to respect and trust (teatures, etc.) grass them up to the authorities instead of confronting their beliefs with reason and argument, I am entirely sympathetic with their plight, if not their beliefs. The reason that kids can embrace such philosophies with such conviction is because there is so much damning evidence of UK war crimes and hypocrisy. That's what happens when you throw the moral high ground away and give people ample reason to hate you and want to blow you up. This was perfectly self-evident to me and the millions of people around the world who marched against the wars. Sadly, not to Bush, Blair, Straw, et al. (Or was it?)

Brendan O'Neill is a habitual liar

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My comment on his latest pack of lies to be published by CiF:
"Brendan O'Neill's analysis is, as usual, utterly divorced from reality. His accusations of neo-imperialism are based on the premise that environmentalists wish to deny Indians the same things they enjoy. This is clearly rubbish as environmentalism is an egalitarian and progressive philosophy that aims to lower carbon emissions by the imposition of just limits. All of the cutting edge environmental literature advocates vastly greater cuts in Western nations than in the developing world- particularly the US and UK- due to our enormous historic emissions legacy. Likewise, the UNEP call for massive technology transfers to the developing world to help them achieve development whilst cutting carbon emissions. Any one who is the least familiar with serious environmentalism is familiar with these proposals. O’Neill clearly isn’t and, therefore, shouldn’t be given a podium from which to mis-represent it.
I don’t need to address the implications of runaway climate change for the developing world because PaulHalsall has highlighted that aspect of O’Neill’s utter ignorance very poignantly.
Likewise with Bluecloud’s revelation that O’Neill misrepresented the Greenpeace study he mentions, presenting it as if its conclusions were somehow endorsing Western excess but condemning the same in India, when it actually did the opposite.
This man is a habitual liar. His work is at best irrelevant and at worst an obstacle to progress. Shame on CiF for publishing it!"
Brendan O'Neill is a pig-ignorant fuckstick.
On a related point, George also has a short commentary piece on his blog pointing out that, having squandered trillions bailing out banks, intergenerational debt is now so high that it has almost reached the point where it is unethical to impose more on our grandchildren- even if the money is spent wisely on funding a Green New Deal. He also mentions a wonderful proposal by the UNEP to tax oil production to fund just such a program.
Israsel's use of flechette shells in Gaza
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Flechette shells are utterly indiscriminate. Imagine being in a hurricane, hail pelting your skin. Then increase the speed of the flying shards of ice by an order of magnitude, until they are travelling with explosive force, and replace them with steel darts designed to tear and lacerate your flesh. That's a flechette weapon.

Israel fired these things repeatedly into areas crowded with people. Even in areas where militants may have been active, as Gaza is one of the most densely populated places on earth, the use of such weapons is psychotic in the extreme as the likelihood of civilians being hit is so high. As with Israel's indiscriminate bombing of Lebanon, this failure to distinguish legitimate targets from civilians is a war crime.

From In Gaza.

Addition:

In a staggering example of the Israeli Defence Force's dehumanisation of the Palestinians there is an article on Haaretz today detailing how a t-shirt printing business is booming with requests from IDF soldiers for clothing adorned with incredibly offensive images and illustrations. One such example is mnodelled below by an IDF soldier and depicts a pregnant woman in a Burka, captured within a sniper's crosshairs centered upon her pregnant belly. Below the image is the legend "1 shot, 2 kills":

A solider interviewed about the designs commented:
"There are people who think it's not right, and I think so as well, but it doesn't really mean anything. I mean it's not like someone is gonna go and shoot a pregnant woman."
Well, no, despite these actions I imagine even the monsters of the IDF would think twice before executing a pregnant woman with a single bullet. That doesn't mean that Israel is not responsible for the deaths of many pregnant women and their babies. So what's the difference?

Addition:

Oh . . . actually:
"One Israeli Defence Force squad leader says of the orders he was given to target civilians: “I call it murder”. As he put it: “In the end the directive was to go into a house, switch on loudspeakers and tell them ‘you have five minutes to run away and whoever doesn’t will be killed.’” In a densely-crowded civilian city, there are all sorts of people who cannot run away: the elderly, the disabled, the pregnant, the terrified. This soldier was told to kill them."

Victory!

why does the New Statesman continue to embrace war criminals?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They have an edition guest-edited by Alistair Campbell and featuring a cover stoy by the same war criminal wanking over how Labour are still a political force in the UK (surprise, surprise!). Other features include Tony Blair claiming that everyone should "do god".
I can't begin to voice my disgust.
Addition:
Apparently neither can Suzanne Moore, who has quit over this disgusting episode. Just a shame she chose the Mail on Sunday as the platform from which to launch her condemnation.
"What was I expecting? A gold watch? A revolution? Peace on Earth? No, simply that some sort of principles were adhered to. The New Statesman fiercely opposed the Iraq War and yet now hands over the reins to someone key in orchestrating that conflict."
Addition - 23/03/09:
A wonderful comment from "Lester Jones" on this CiF article on the subject, which I encourage you to read in full.
"Blair's article on religion is also uninspiring editorially, we all know the man is committed to his belief system because it fills the gap that his politics leaves so fully de-humanized..."
There is even a couple of comments on the same thread from Suzanne Moore herself!
Addition 14-04-09:
Richard Dawkins got a chance to respond to Blair's gibberish and fucking pw3nd him! Richard rules. This in no way makes up for the travesty the NS committed giving a podium to this prime prick of a war criminal. I said as much in the comments.
Key Messages from the Congress
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

12 March 2009

Copenhagen, Denmark: Following a successful International Scientific Congress Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges & Decisions attended by more than 2,500 delegates from nearly 80 countries, preliminary messages from the findings were delivered by the Congress' Scientific Writing Team. The conclusions will be published into a full synthesis report June 2009. The conclusions were handed over to the Danish Prime Minister Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen today. The Danish Government will host the UN Climate Change Conference in December 2009 and will hand over the conclusions to the decision makers ahead of the Conference.

The six preliminary key messages are:

Key Message 1: Climatic Trends

Recent observations confirm that, given high rates of observed emissions, the worst-case IPCC scenario trajectories (or even worse) are being realised. For many key parameters, the climate system is already moving beyond the patterns of natural variability within which our society and economy have developed and thrived. These parameters include global mean surface temperature, sea-level rise, ocean and ice sheet dynamics, ocean acidification, and extreme climatic events. There is a significant risk that many of the trends will accelerate, leading to an increasing risk of abrupt or irreversible climatic shifts.

Key Message 2: Social disruption

The research community is providing much more information to support discussions on "dangerous climate change". Recent observations show that societies are highly vulnerable to even modest levels of climate change, with poor nations and communities particularly at risk. Temperature rises above 2C will be very difficult for contemporary societies to cope with, and will increase the level of climate disruption through the rest of the century.

Key Message 3: Long-Term Strategy

Rapid, sustained, and effective mitigation based on coordinated global and regional action is required to avoid "dangerous climate change" regardless of how it is defined. Weaker targets for 2020 increase the risk of crossing tipping points and make the task of meeting 2050 targets more difficult. Delay in initiating effective mitigation actions increases significantly the long-term social and economic costs of both adaptation and mitigation.

Key Message 4 - Equity Dimensions

Climate change is having, and will have, strongly differential effects on people within and between countries and regions, on this generation and future generations, and on human societies and the natural world. An effective, well-funded adaptation safety net is required for those people least capable of coping with climate change impacts, and a common but differentiated mitigation strategy is needed to protect the poor and most vulnerable.

Key Message 5: Inaction is Inexcusable

There is no excuse for inaction. We already have many tools and approaches ? economic, technological, behavioural, management ? to deal effectively with the climate change challenge. But they must be vigorously and widely implemented to achieve the societal transformation required to decarbonise economies. A wide range of benefits will flow from a concerted effort to alter our energy economy now, including sustainable energy job growth, reductions in the health and economic costs of climate change, and the restoration of ecosystems and revitalisation of ecosystem services.

Key Message 6: Meeting the Challenge

To achieve the societal transformation required to meet the climate change challenge, we must overcome a number of significant constraints and seize critical opportunities. These include reducing inertia in social and economic systems; building on a growing public desire for governments to act on climate change; removing implicit and explicit subsidies; reducing the influence of vested interests that increase emissions and reduce resilience; enabling the shifts from ineffective governance and weak institutions to innovative leadership in government, the private sector and civil society; and engaging society in the transition to norms and practices that foster sustainability.

About the congress

The International Scientific Congress on Climate Change is taking place in Copenhagen 10 - 12 March. More than 2,000 participants are registered. The congress has received almost 1,600 scientific contributions from researchers from more than 70 countries. The preliminary conclusions from the congress will be presented Thursday 12 March at the closing session of the congress and will be developed in a synthesis report to be published in June this year. The synthesis report will be handed over to all participants at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in December in Copenhagen by the Danish Government. It is organized by International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU):

  • Australian National University
  • ETH Z├╝rich
  • National University of Singapore
  • Peking University
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • University of Cambridge
  • University of Copenhagen

BBC regurgitates discredited Iranian nuclear warhead claim

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The International Atomic Energy Agency published a report on Iran's nuclear program in February 2009 that was misrepresented by the NY Times and the Financial Times in particular as stating that Iran had accumulated enough enriched uranium for a warhead. This claim was subsequently ripped to shreds. Unfortunately no-one told the BBC, who have just regurgitated the claim in their story on Brown's finger waving at Iran.
why we are all fucked
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Because they keep doing shit like this. NeoMalthusianism 101: You can't expand infinitely within a finite space. Earth is a semi-closed system and, as the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment reported, many of the planet's habitats are already degraded, or threatened with degraation by human activity. And the obssession with growth- both in economic and human population terms- means that that degradation will continue. Choice exerts from the Overall Synthesis include:
"approximately 60% (15 out of 24) of the ecosystem services examined during the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment are being degraded or used unsustainably, including fresh water, capture fisheries, air and water purification, and the regulation of regional and local climate, natural hazards, and pests"

"there is established but incomplete evidence that changes being made in ecosystems are increasing the likelihood of nonlinear changes in ecosystems (including accelerating, abrupt, and potentially irreversible changes) that have important consequences for human well-being. Examples of such changes include disease emergence, abrupt alterations in water quality, the creation of “dead zones” in coastal waters, the collapse of fisheries, and shifts in regional climate"
"the harmful effects of the degradation of ecosystem services (the persistent decrease in the capacity of an ecosystem to deliver services) are being borne disproportionately by the poor, are contributing to growing inequities and disparities across groups of people, and are sometimes the principal factor causing poverty and social conflict"
Just read the synthesis.

They have carried on producing thunderous gas guzzlers long after the market collapsed. the UK government is shit

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Its nice to see that, despite the Independent frequently publishing utter cock, it still has a few of the staff kicking around who originally made it a quality paper. One of them is Geoffrey Lean. Following on from Jonathon Porritt's coverage of the UK's pathetic efforts to invest in developing and applying green technologies as a form of economic stimulus- the "Green New Deal"- Geoff reported last Sunday on a survey by HSBC that reveals that the UK government is trailing almost all others in the world in this respect, despite the untold billions they have thrown at the banks. This weekend he has covered Alistair Darling's personal role obstructing public investment in a Green New Deal for this country. So, once again we have evidence to show that this government is incapable of taking action to limit the worst effects of the fuckyounomic implosion, uninterested in developing any UK expertise in green technology and unprepared to take rapid, effective action to limit our nation's contributions to climate change. Geoff rules. The UK government are shit.
Simon Usborne and Helen Brown are both ignorant twats
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Indy has put a set of photos compiled by these two up on their website with text passages below and the title "Inconvenient truths: Don't believe the greenwash". When I read this I assumed it would be some expose on the subject, along the lines of Fred Pearce's work for the Guardian. Sadly not. It is, in fact, an odyssey of misinformation, obfustication and outright anti-environmentalism masquerading as a critique of environmentalism. These two are so fucking stupid that they do not understand the difference between "ecologists" and "environmentalists", as the sub-heading beneath the link to the article on the front page of the Indy reads "the facts many ecologists would rather ignore".

Seriously. Fucking. Weak.

Addition:

I started writing a point-by-point critique of it but I'm labouring under a gods-awful hangover and gave up after the first two because I couldn't muster the effort to do it justice. I'm feeling a little more manly now so, having been inspired by John B's comment below, I'm back to have another stab.

Number 2 is just bizarre. The authors' claim of there being "some serious cute collateral along the way" to achieving EU renewable energy generation targets ignores the consequences of climate change and continuing GHG emissions. So there is no "cute collateral"- there is the lesser of two evils whereby the installation of renewable generation capacity results in limited disturbance to the environment. Much less than climate change is predicted to, anyway.

Number 3 is clearly bollocks. Nuclear is a favourite ranting topic of mine so I am content to simply link to previous posts that explain why it sucks ass. Most of the best arguments come from Monsieur Godhaven. Who rules.

Number 4 is fair enough.

Number 5, as John B points out, is overplayed but generally correct. However, it omits mention of the elephant in the room, which is that hybrids are utterly pointless when you can buy fully electric vehicles. It also omits from its discussion of footprints the obvious point that driving an old car around means no resources consumed in the production of a new one and no scrap generated from your old car.

Number 6 is a sack of shit. "Clean Coal" is an oxymoron. End of story.

Number 7 is another bizarre one because it starts with the title "Organic farming doesn't add up" and then throws a bunch of odd facts at you about farming, some of which are incredibly contentious. The factoid about organic cattle feed containing more roughage and resulting in more methane production is just bollocks. The potential for waste organic material to be used for anaerobic digestion to produce methane isn't mentioned and the massive contributions of fertilisers to GHG emissions also doesn't seem relevant to these two fuckwits.

Number 8 is such a blinkered argument that I truly struggle to believe it made into print in a national newspaper. It just goes to show you how dangerous a little knowledge can be in the wrong hands. Yes, trees' CO2 uptake falls when they reach maturity. No, this doesn't mean we should cut down ancient forests and replant them. That is exactly the sort of piecemeal analysis, ignoring any interaction more complex than the most obvious, that results in natural disasters such as the flooding we now experience so regularly or climate change. Individual trees may absord less carbon as they age but the forest as a whole remains a massive and growing sink for carbon. You can't argue with Nature (see what I did there?).

Number 9 is just cock. Goat cock, in specific. Once again, Merrick will explain. And George. I might observe that engineering algae to produce biofuels efficiently is one application of GM that I wholeheartedly support. As long as the algae are grown in a closed system to prevent their genes escaping into the wider ecosystem.

Number 10 is bang on the money.

Number 11 is another odd one. Yes China could produce enough wind turbines to power the world. Why we would want it to when we could do it ourselves, thereby generating jobs and simultaneously saving the world isn't considered. Again, the big-picture eludes our two type-writer equipped monkeys.

Punkscience was born in Holland. Many years ago. Punkmum just shared with him that, in the first three months of his pregnancy, she deposited her morning wee in a designated receptacle and left it outside the door for a health official to collect. On Tuesday 10 March the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights will discuss whether or not to hear my evidence on the UK government’s policy of using intelligence from torture. They discussed whether to hear my evidence on 3 March but failed to reach a conclusion.

The government is lobbying hard for my exclusion. I need everybody to send an email to jchr@parliament.uk to urge that I should be allowed to give evidence. Just a one-liner would be fine. If you are able to add some comment on the import of my evidence, or indicate that you have heard me speak or read my work, that may help. Please copy your email to craigjmurray@tiscali.co.uk.

Please also pass on this plea to anyone you can and urge them to act. Help from other bloggers in posting this appeal would be much appreciated.

Labour and the Grauniad

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why does the Graun persist in publishing blatant propaganda by Labour oiks? There has been a series of implausible commentaries published in CiF over the last few weeks- I mean far more than ususal. We have had Jack Straw explaining how we are all mistaken to see a police state in the UK in the 21st century and that Labour have actually expanded freedoms and civil liberties throughout their reign. We have had Hazel Blears trying to defend her overt lack of principle from George's wonderfully evidence-based onslaught. We have even been graced with first-hand experience of the Prime Minister's own, deranged world-view, in which bankers really haven't been handed multi-billion pound hand outs while the real economy slides into the toilet and unemployment soars. Today, and in a similar vein, we have some prick called Stephen Beer, claiming exactly the same thing as the Prime Minister did- and rightly getting exactly the same incredulous response from the Graun commentariat.
What I want to know is when will CiF provide the same number of column inches to members of other political parties to share their solutions to the national debacle. We could have Nick Griffin blaming it all on the immigrunts or Nick Clegg rightly blaming it all on, well, anyone but him. We could even have Caroline Lucas come and tell us its all the product of the capitalist-fundamentalist, fuckyounomic ideology. Don't hold your breath for it though.
